Watch Now - Putin's Nuclear Messaging and the Oreshnik Missile Test: Bluff or Coercion?

Hello everyone,

Welcome to The Saratoga Foundation’s inaugural event: Putin’s Nuclear Messaging and the Oreshnik Missile Test: Bluff or Coercion? We are delighted that you are taking the time to watch our latest online discussion.

On November 21st Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the launching of a new experimental missile called the Oreshnik missile. Traveling at a reported speed of Mach 10 President Putin indicated he had created a new WunderWaffen or superweapon capable of penetrating Western airspace and striking anywhere in Europe. A week later he announced the missile had begun widespread production threatening a new missile race aimed at Europe and the United States.

One of the major reasons we put this event together today is that there was a political dimension behind Putin’s launching of the Oreshnik and many journalists in the Western media followed the Kremlin’s use of reflexive control by becoming focused on whether this was a new superweapon forgetting about what the actual political message was behind the launching of the missile.

Prior to the launching of the Oreshnik, the Ukrainian government was given permission by the Biden administration for the first time to fire long-range ATACMS into Russia’s Kursk region to defend its forces operating there since August 8.

So, where are we today? Are we on the threshold of World War III, or are we simply being victims of Putin’s nuclear coercion strategy? Is Putin’s objective to escalate the stakes in Ukraine, warning the US and its NATO allies to halt their support for Ukraine?Or was it aimed at the new President-Elect now living in Mar a Lago, if so why?

Helping us to dissect these events are three distinguished experts:

1) Pavel Luzin, a noted expert on the Russian military and security issues is currently a Senior Fellow at the Saratoga Foundation and is also a Visiting Scholar at the Fletcher School of Diplomacy.

2) Andrei Illarionov is a former high-ranking Russian government official who previously served as an Economic Adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Andrei is currently a Senior Analyst at the Center for Security Policy. We should listen closely to what Andrei has to say as he previously predicted the Russian financial crisis in 1998 and has been frequently right on many things occurring inside Russia ever since.

3) Our third speaker will be Philip Breedlove who is a member of the board of The Saratoga Foundation and is the former Supreme Allied Commander Europe and is someone who has been tracking malign Russian activities since Putin seized Crimea in 2014 and has been actively in the prevent further Russian aggression ever since. General Breedlove has seen many Russian missile launches in his lifetime, and he will help us understand Russian strategic intentions behind the surprise Russian launching of the Oreshnik missile.
